Trek Description
Trekking through the Everest region of Nepal is possibly the worlds all time classic mountain journey. Hiking to Everest Base Camp has become a modern day pilgrimage, and for many very good reasons. The Khumbu, as the region is known to the indigenous Sherpa people combines magnificent mountain scenery and a fascinating Buddhist culture. We take a circular route, crossing the high Cho La Pass (5330m) to visit all the major settlements and view points of the region. A couple of extra acclimatization days ensure a relaxed and enjoyable pace.
Leaving Kathmandu on an exciting mountain flight to Lukla, offers extensive views of the entire Nepalese Himalaya. After introducing ourselves to our local staff, we follow the Dudh Kosi River to Namche, the ancient Tibetan trading settlement and Sherpa ‘Capital’. There is plenty of time to acclimatize and explore the beautiful village of Thame, before entering the broad, arid Gokyo Valley. We ascend gradually following the Dudh Kosi to reach Gokyo well acclimatized. We have the option of ascending Gokyo Ri (5360m) and the Renjo La, with arguably the best views of Everest to be had from anywhere in the Khumbu. Crossing the snow covered Cho La brings us to the main Everest Valley and we trek to historic Everest Base Camp, the dream of many adventurers. There is an option to ascend Kala Patar (5550m), a popular walking summit and our closest vantage point to Sagarmatha, the Sherpa name for Everest. Starting our descent from Gorak Shep, our trek is far from over as we head down to Tengboche Monastery and take an optional trek on the quiet trails to Ama Dablam Base Camp, one of the Himalayas most beautiful mountains and a gem missed on most Everest treks. High above the Imja Khola we follow airy trails back through Namche retracing our steps to Lukla, and our breathtaking return flight to Kathmandu.
Testimonial
I've trekked with Mick a few times and can safely say he's by far my favorite guide and trek leader. Technically, he knows his stuff, but Mick has many skills beyond that. His interests in the mountains extend from the geology through the flora and fauna to the stars in the sky, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He also understands the psychology of his clients; I can safely say that without his 4am pep talk, I'd never have made it to the summit!
