Translated from Tibetan, Rolwaling means “furrowed place" and local legend says the long narrow valley was ploughed by Guru Rimpoche, the precious teacher in the 8th Century. After meditating here for 3 months Guru Rimpoche declared the Rolwaling Valley a ‘beyul' or secret land where powerful forces help the seeker on their journey to enlightenment. It was through the Rolwaling Valley, more than 500 years ago that Tibetans first came to settle the more fertile lands around Mount Everest. The 1950's saw the first Westerners exploring the region, either as part of the major Everest reconnaissance expeditions, or more low key exploration's like that described in Tom Weir's, “East of Kathmandu".  Exploration and Spiritual fame our joined by myth in the Rolwaling with Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Chris Bonnington both launching searches for the elusive Yeti.

Our Rolwaling Valley & Everest trek offers just about everything a mountain adventurer can dream of. The Wilderness Trekking itinerary has evolved into a most rewarding Himalayan journey.  Beautiful lowland trekking through foothills alive with terraced farming and Hindu influences lead us to higher altitudes where mountain grandeur and Tibetan Buddhism dominate. Conditions permitting we will climb Yalung Ri (5630m), an ideal peak for non climbers who dream of experiencing a Himalayan summit. Continuing through the Rolwaling Valley we cross the challenging Tesi Lapsta pass (5755m) and enter the Khumbu, homeland of the Sherpa and Mount Everest. We cross the Renjo La to Gokyo for the most rewarding views of the world's highest mountain before descending to Lukla and our mountain flight to Kathmandu.

The Rolwaling Valley & Everest is a remote, challenging high altitude trek and climb offering massive mountain wilderness and subtle cultural experiences. We cannot recommend this trip highly enough. Please contact us for further details.

Wilderness Trekking donates a percentage of sales from each trek to our friends at the Umbrella Orphanage, Kathmandu.
